Veto of Oklahoma Legislation Puts Massage Therapy Profession at Risk
May 22, 2025
On May 14, 2025, Governor Stitt vetoed HB 1030—a pivotal piece of legislation that would have extended the sunset date for the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. This decision carries immediate and far-reaching consequences for the massage therapy profession across the state.
The Massage Therapy Advisory Board functions under the jurisdiction of the Cosmetology and Barbering Board. Without swift legislative intervention to override this veto, our profession stands at a dangerous crossroads. We risk losing formal oversight, standardized education requirements, and effective enforcement or accountability mechanisms.
Massage therapy licensure is more than a formality—it is a vital safeguard for public safety. It ensures that practitioners are properly trained, meet established qualifications, and uphold ethical and professional standards. Without licensure, we risk unregulated practice, potential exploitation, and harm to the credibility of our profession.
This moment demands immediate action. Your voice is essential.
Please contact your legislators and Governor Stitt’s office today. Urge them to override the veto of HB 1030 and defend the integrity, safety, and future of massage therapy in Oklahoma.
Thank you for your continued dedication to the massage therapy profession and to the safety and well-being of the communities we serve. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to AMTA's Government Relations Team.
