The Key to Social Media Marketing? Keep It Simple

My clients often ask how they can make their social media marketing more effective. Should they have a Twitter page, Facebook page or LinkedIn account? Should they buy ads on Facebook or run a contest to get more followers? Should they promote special offers or discounts just for their fans or perhaps to entice people to become fans?

The answers differ from one business to the next. But the one thing I can say to all of them is KISS--Keep It Simple Sweetheart! For your own peace of mind—as well as for the over-taxed brains and minds of your students, prospective students and other contacts—I suggest you take these three basic steps to get a good idea of how and where to spend your time and energy.

Three Steps to Effective Social Media Marketing

1. Know your intended audience. Take a little time to determine exactly who you are trying to reach with your social media efforts. Are you looking to stay in touch with former graduates and alumni or prospective future students? Is your audience made up of just people in your area or the massage/wellness community at large? By knowing who you are speaking to, you’ll be better able to craft your content to appeal to their interests and intellects.

2. Ask the members of your intended audience which social media sites they use. In the case of past or prospective students, this can be done fairly easily by talking to those already in your classes and recent graduates. A poll or question about this topic could be added to your admissions page or website as well as your initial admissions form.

3. Determine which of the indicated social media tools best fit you’re your school’s culture and capabilities. If you already have lots of staff members using Facebook, for example, it will be fairly easy to have one or more of them help to create and maintain a page or group for your school.

The bottom line with social media marketing? Use tools and tasks that are simple to implement consistently and are of interest to your audience. This strategy will help all of you reach your goals!
