Experience AMTA at the 2014 National Convention with keynote speaker Dr. Oz! We recently sat down with Dr. Oz to discuss massage therapy as well as the future of the profession. For the full interview, be sure to check out the winter issue of Massage Therapy Journal (mtj).
What do you feel are some of the most important health benefits of regular massage?
I feel that regular massage is an extremely effective treatment for reducing stress, pain, and muscle tension. Some studies have found it may be helpful for anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headaches, TMJ and even blood pressure as well. In heart surgery, massage has been shown to be an effective intervention post-operatively to alleviate pain, tension and anxiety.
How has the acceptance of massage therapy by both patients and other health care professionals evolved since you first started talking with patients and consumers about the value of massage therapy?
There has been a dramatic shift in the value of massage therapy over the years. Massage was once seen as an amenity and now it’s appreciated as a powerful complementary therapy.
For your patients, what qualities do you look for in a massage therapist?
I would recommend a massage therapist who is caring and has a flexible approach. You don’t necessarily want the “best” massage therapist; you want the “right” massage therapist.
Looking forward, where do you see the most potential for massage therapy in health care?
I believe hospitals should make massages available to patients who desire the service for recovery. The average citizen should be able to feel comfortable pursuing massage therapy as an adjunct to health.
What can attendees at the AMTA National Convention expect to learn from your experiences with treating patients and integrating massage and other complementary approaches?
Attendees at the AMTA National Convention can learn a lot from my personal insights, anecdotes and what I’ve experienced over the past 20 years in sharing the value of massage therapy with my patients.
