Where Do You Work? AMTA Member Ryan Kern

“I’m definitely known for following up comments with ‘massage can help with that!’” says Ryan Kern, massage therapist and AMTA member. “AMTA’s National Massage Therapy Awareness Week is a perfect way for me to share all the ways in which massage therapy can be helpful.”

Read more about Ryan, how he used AMTA’s National Massage Therapy Awareness Week to increase business and what advice he offers newcomers.

What first attracted you to the massage therapy profession?
I’ve always been interested in massage therapy, but after high school decided to pursue a career in computers. Years later, when the company I was working for relocated, I decided to go back to school for what I call my first love—massage therapy. From the start, I knew this career change gave me the potential to grow, and be more healthy and active.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
My greatest joy is being able to see an objective difference in my clients’ mobility and overall wellness after their massage therapy sessions. I love seeing people leave my practice better than they arrived. I approach challenges head on, and draw on a variety of resources to problem solve. I'll talk to other massage therapy professionals with more experience, for example, or ask a question on AMTA’s LinkedIn page.

Why was it important for you to participate in AMTA’s National Massage Therapy Awareness Week? How did you celebrate?
I am an individual who often celebrates the possibilities for wellness that massage therapy can provide. I’m definitely known for following up most comments with, “massage can help with that!” So, an event like AMTA’s National Massage Therapy Awareness Week is a perfect way for me to share all the ways in which massage therapy can be helpful. For me, in a newer setting, my plan involves providing exciting discounts to increase business. I'm also focusing on the intake and session discussions to really promote the value of regular massage.

What advice would you offer to other newcomers to the profession?
This industry is so multifaceted. Although burn-out is a concern I often hear about, I think the ways massage therapists can expand their horizons and possibilities are endless! You don’t have to see any one work environment as the only one for you. Great massage therapists see an opportunity to provide outstanding, customized massage therapy wherever they find themselves employed. With AMTA’s great resources and the ever-expanding network of massage therapists you meet, you’re never alone in this profession.

Hobbies and interests?
The store that I am located within is an amazing hub for community and culture, and long before I rented space from my friend and business mentor, I became a regular part of the community she helps to facilitate. While I have an amazing marketing opportunity through her, it’s so much more than that!
