Important Update Regarding the Revised Massage Therapy Compact in Tennessee

February 27, 2026

The AMTA Government Relations Team, working alongside our Tennessee lobbyist, has been meeting with state legislators to advocate for the Revised Massage Therapy Compact and the continued advancement of the massage therapy profession.

We are pleased to share that, as a result of these efforts, SB 2446 has passed out of the Senate with a positive recommendation. This marks meaningful progress for massage therapists and the communities they serve across Tennessee.

With Senate approval secured, SB 2446 now moves to the House as HB 2201, where it will be considered in several committees. This is the next important step toward establishing the Revised Compact in Tennessee and ensuring accessible, safe, and effective legislation for massage therapists and residents statewide.

The Interstate Massage Therapy Compact allows licensed massage therapists who meet established eligibility requirements to practice in multiple states without obtaining additional licenses.

Why the Revised Massage Therapy Compact Matters

  • The Revised Compact provides greater flexibility for active-duty military families, making it easier to maintain licensure when relocating across state lines.

  • The proposed amendments also strengthen professional mobility while upholding strong public protection standards through consistent eligibility criteria and verification processes.

  • Massage therapy plays a vital role in health and wellness. Enhancing the Compact’s functionality and inclusivity expands access for qualified professionals, supports workforce mobility, and preserves the high standards that protect both practitioners and the public.
