Carl Nelson is retiring after 58 years and nine months of employment with the St. Joseph Family YMCA. He graduated from the Kansas City School of Swedish Massage on December 13, 1960, and began his career with the St. Joseph YMCA on April 1, 1961.
Recognizing the importance of continuing education and networking with other massage therapy professionals, in 1970, he became a member of the Missouri AMTA chapter. Through his membership with AMTA, he attended numerous workshops and continuing education classes, learning the newest skills and techniques in massage therapy.
Carl played an essential role in the rebuilding of the Missouri AMTA chapter during the early 1980s and served in the leadership roles of President, Vice President, and 15 years as Treasurer. In 1981, he earned the prestigious Registered Massage Therapist Certification, and then in 1993, he became Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Body Work.
The Missouri Chapter of AMTA honored Carl for outstanding service and accomplishments in his field, presenting him with the Meritorious Award in 1987, and AMTA presented him with the National Meritorious Award in 2010. Governor Matt Blunt appointed Carl to the Missouri State Board of Therapeutic Massage in 2005.
Carl will continue to reside in St Joseph upon his retirement where he and his wife, Sherline, enjoy square dancing and are active members of the Savannah Shashayers Square Dancing Club. Carl and Sherline have a daughter, Bonnie, and Son in Law, Patrick who live in St. Joseph, MO, and a son Rodney that that lives in Overland Park, KS, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
