AMTA Reaffirms Commitment to Safe Work Environments for Massage Therapists

July 3, 2025

The National Football League (NFL) recently made a decision to suspend former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker for 10 games without pay, following allegations of inappropriate conduct involving 16 massage therapists between 2012 and 2016. This decisive action signals the NFL’s recognition of the seriousness of these allegations and the importance of accountability at all levels.

In a statement to the New York Sun, AMTA emphasized that “no individual, regardless of status, is above the standard of professional behavior,” reaffirming its commitment to ensuring safe, respectful work environments for all massage professionals. Representing more than 105,000 licensed massage therapists nationwide, AMTA called the suspension a “powerful reminder” that everyone—including athletes—has to uphold professional standards.

AMTA reiterated that inappropriate behavior of any kind—including non-therapeutic touch or suggestive comments—is unacceptable. As an association, we urge massage therapists to immediately end any session in which misconduct occurs and to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities.

AMTA also stated, “To uphold the highest standards of safety and professionalism, it is essential that massage therapy practices—and sports organizations—enforce clear, robust protocols that protect both clients and practitioners.”
