Alabama Massage Licensing Board Update

October 9, 2025

On September 25, 2025, the Alabama Joint Interim Sunset Committee met to decide what’s next for the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy. Right now, the Massage Board is operating under the Alabama Board of Nursing.

The Committee voted unanimously to keep the Massage Board in place for another year. They also approved a change in state law that will move the Board’s administrative oversight from the Board of Nursing to the Alabama Department of Health starting October 1, 2026. This change is meant to give the Massage Board a more stable and better-suited administrative home in the future.

What This Means for Massage Therapists in Alabama

At this time, there are no changes for licensed massage therapists in the state. The Alabama Board of Massage Therapy will continue to operate under the Board of Nursing, and all current processes for licensing, renewals, and compliance remain the same.

AMTA will continue to closely monitor this transition and share updates with our massage community as new details emerge. In the meantime, we encourage you to contact the AMTA Government Relations Team with any questions. As always, we remain committed to supporting all Alabama massage therapists.
