Curriculum Update: Teaching Integration of Assessments Into Intake

Curriculum Update

Proper intake is one key to ensuring good client relationships and long-term success in the profession. We know, however, that our graduates continue to struggle in this area. Get ideas from an experienced instructor on assessment strategies that you can integrate into your classroom to help ensure your students have the skills they need for proper intake.*

Why Assessments Matter

Assessments can benefit both you and the client. As a longtime massage school instructor, I know students learn and are tested in a wide range of assessment techniques. However, performing assessments during intake seems to be in danger of becoming a lost art. This in response to a variety of factors:

  • our perception of client expectations
  • employer policies that mean the client must be on the table for the full duration of the purchased session
  • employer policies that mean turnover between clients is severely limited
  • the falling-away of assessment skills that don’t seem to be valued in the work setting

Thorough client assessments benefit both the client and massage therapist and are essential to:

  • ensure client safety
  • ensure an ethical practice
  • encourage client education and retention
  • enhance professional skills and growth

An accepted marketing axiom is that retaining a client is far more cost-effective for a business owner than finding a new one. A client who feels he or she has ownership of an ongoing treatment plan has more of an investment in remaining your client. Policies that support time for client assessment show clients and staff that the standard of service is a client-centered treatment, not an assembly-line product.
