Q&A With AMTA Schools Summit's Kevin Carroll

Kevin Carroll is a masterful storyteller with a tremendous gift for reaching an audience. Your passion for developing the future of the massage therapy profession will be invigorated with his insight and humor. We recently asked Kevin about his unique background and the energy he will bring to the AMTA 2015 Schools Summit in Tampa, Florida.

With your athletic training background, how have you seen massage therapy impact athletes?

I’ve witnessed the positive impact that massage therapy can have on an athlete’s recovery in a myriad of ways to include: post-game competition, pre/post practices, conditioning regimens, post-op recovery, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

What would you tell massage therapists who want to work in a sports setting?

I think it’s important to have several years of experience in massage therapy, be supremely confident in your communication skills and your ability to handle the “quirks/eccentricities/egos” that may be found within an athletic setting. There are many sports settings that could potentially utilize the expertise of a seasoned massage therapist – sports medicine clinic, university/college athletic department, referral via team sports medicine staff, personal massage therapist for a professional athlete or a referral service via hotel concierge.

Sports settings can be an exciting, wonderful and rewarding area to share one’s skills as a massage therapist but it can also be a very unpredictable and challenging environment.

How can massage therapy teachers best inspire and connect with students so they can be successful?

Be PRESENT. Be Generous with your knowledge. Ensure that your students understand the healing power they possess with their hands (the two most powerful “modalities” of a health practitioner!). ENERGY matters!

When you think of some of the teachers who most inspired you, what are some of the qualities that come to mind?

Encouraging, challenging, engaging, nurturing, generous, life-long learners, Socratic, FUN, wonderful storytellers.

What can AMTA Schools Summit attendees expect to learn from your experiences?

By cleverly drawing from the amazing lessons of our childhood” activities, I will reveal the relevance, value and the artistry that is on full display in these pursuits and show why we MUST continue to tap into those lessons of PLAY for our business, community and personal success. I will deliver simple truths around the importance of "purposeful play" and how it can unleash the creative genius within all of us.

What advice do you have for massage therapy instructors to maintain their enthusiasm for teaching?

Remain forever curious and do your “human homework*” daily!
*personal and professional development work!
