The 2012 AMTA House of Delegates (HOD) approved three position statements to express AMTA’s views on how a growing body of research indicates the value of massage for specific health issues. The approved statements are:
- It is the position of the American Massage Therapy Association that massage therapy can be effective in reducing low back pain.
- It is the position of the American Massage Therapy Association that massage therapy can help improve sleep.
- It is the position of the American Massage Therapy association that massage therapy can be a beneficial part of an integrative treatment plan for those who suffer with fibromyalgia syndrome.
Your association has now approved 12 position statements through the HOD. All of the position statements were proposed by members, completed review to ensure they met criteria for proposals and were approved by the HOD. AMTA’s process is that once a proposed position statement is approved by the HOD it immediately becomes the position of the association.
Members can propose position statements at any time of the year. They will be reviewed by the Position Statement Review Commission and be sent to the HOD if they meet all criteria. This is an excellent opportunity for members who have a strong interest in what research is demonstrating about the value of massage therapy to develop position statements the association and massage therapists can use to help educate others in health care and consumers.
Recommendations to AMTA Board
This year’s HOD also approved two recommendations to be considered by the AMTA Board of Directors.
A Bylaw amendment recommendation from the Iowa Chapter asks the board to consider allowing a delegate to maintain their position if they cannot attend the HOD Preliminary Meeting or Business Meeting, due to circumstances beyond their control.
A recommendation from the Indiana chapter asks the board to consider reimbursing chapters for funds spent visiting schools.
The board will consider the recommendations at a future face-to-face meeting.
