Engage, Evolve, Inform: Themes From the AMTA 2013 Schools Summit

Educators, teachers, school owners and AMTA leadership met in Chicago, February 7-8, for the AMTA 2013 Schools Summit. Passionate members of the massage community engaged in dynamic discussions focusing on the state of the profession and how massage therapy programs are changing and evolving to meet current challenges while seizing opportunities for growth and advancement.

Practical and high-level sessions included "Blending Learning—Integrating Face-to-Face and Online Learning;" "Power and Professionalism, Exploring Ethics as Right Use of Power;" and "Managing Student Behavior in the Classroom." The in-depth session "Imaging Fascia" showed educators the various ways scientific images are made and how teachers can apply that information to their field.

Apply the Research: 2013 Massage Therapy Profession Report

AMTA also released a school-oriented edition of its annual Massage Therapy Profession Report. Educators and attendees examined and analyzed how the research will directly impact their schools, students and instructors as well as future recruitment and retention strategies for schools.

 Entry Level Analysis Project

AMTA President Cynthia Ribeiro and ABMP Education Director Ann Williams presented early information about the Entry Level Analysis Project (ELAP), which will be open for public comment in April. This project was as outgrowth of the Industry Summits attended by representatives of the various massage therapy organization and has a goal to map out a realistic, evidence-informed and quantified description of content and skill qualifications for an entry-level education in massage therapy.

New Scholarship Program Launched

AMTA also announced its new AMTA Student Scholarship program as an exciting new initiative to support the next generation of massage therapists. This program will invite students to participate in an essay contest where one applicant will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. The Application Form is now available on the AMTA website and all entries must be received by May 31. Read more about the program.
