Developing Resources for Managing a Student Clinic

Managing a student clinic is one of the biggest challenges facing schools. Striking a balance between the need for a productive and positive learning environment, revenue goals and appropriate staffing can be all-consuming.

At the Schools Summit, attendees gathered to discuss the day-to-day needs of running a clinic and the resources required to successfully do so. Working from the Guidelines for Managing a Student Clinic document that was developed after a similar session at last year’s Schools Summit, attendees discussed topics listed below and the challenges associated with them.

Student Clinic Roundtable Hot Topics:

  • Clinic supervisory staff's role

  • Incorporating up-to-date modalities and classroom instruction.

  • Developing effective student assessments

  • Supporting and conveying professionalism

  • Client management tools

Attendees identified a host of resources to help address these areas. The next step in this project is the creation of a dedicated area of the AMTA website for resources to address these challenges. Look for this to debut in 2012 and include sample policies, procedures and guidelines for managing your clinic!
