On Wednesday, October 18, a select group of educators participated in the first AMTA Educators Knowledge Forum Luncheon prior to the AMTA National Convention in Portland, Oregon. This high-profile think tank was convened to identify the top issues facing massage therapy schools and their leaders.
Thirty leaders from the education field discussed critical issues that are impacting schools, students, administrators and the massage therapy profession. The forum provided an opportunity for educators to come together and talk candidly about the challenges facing them everyday.
Educators identified several key trends and opportunities, including:
- Title IV (financial aid funding) changes
- Measuring student competencies to ensure success in our programs and in the profession
- Educator standards
- Ethical standards for schools
The Educators Knowledge Forum marks the beginning of ongoing conversations between AMTA School members as they grapple with the continually changing landscape of massage therapy education. The forum also provides a critical opportunity for AMTA to hear the School member voice directly. AMTA wil use this feedback to create and update School member benefits and resources.
The AMTA 2012 Schools Summit, February 16-17, in Chicago, will be the next opportunity for School members to come together, face-to-face, for education and best-practice sharing.
