AMTA Update on Tennessee House Bill 2387

Many in the massage therapy profession have been following the proposed changes to massage therapy licensure in Tennessee. AMTA is happy to report that in a recent meeting at the Governor’s office, AMTA-TN Chapter leaders were informed that HB 2387 will be amended and will no longer impact the regulation of massage therapy.

The AMTA-TN Chapter successfully demonstrated to the Governor’s office that massage therapy is a health-related profession and should be regulated like other health-related professions. The Governor’s office also has asked for assistance from our chapter leadership in streamlining the efficiency of professional regulation in Tennessee. These developments come after countless hours of research and conversations with representatives from the Governor’s office.

AMTA and the AMTA-TN Chapter would like to thank Governor Haslam for his willingness to work with massage therapy stakeholders to ensure an outcome that benefits everyone involved. We applaud the Governor for his commitment to massage therapy as a health-related profession and to protect both the public and our profession. AMTA looks forward to continuing work with Mr. Haslam’s office to increase the efficiency and efficacy of massage therapy regulation in Tennessee.

The American Massage Therapy Association is the largest non-profit, professional association serving massage therapists, massage students and massage schools. The association is directed by volunteer leadership and fosters ongoing, direct member-involvement through its 51 chapters. AMTA works to advance the profession through ethics and standards, the promotion of fair and consistent licensing of massage therapists in all states, and public education on the benefits of massage.
