AMTA Saddened by Losses in Southern States, Monitoring for Potential of Massage Therapists to Aid Responders

The devastating effects of the tornadoes that struck southern states in the last week have cost hundreds of lives and destroyed the homes and businesses of thousands of people. The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) extends its heartfelt condolences to those who lost loved ones in the storms and wishes the very best to those struggling to recover from their great losses.

AMTA is in contact with its chapters in the states affected and is still gathering information about the storms’ effects on our members there. We also are monitoring relief efforts that may call for massage therapist volunteers to help relief and recovery workers cope with the physical and emotional strains of their vital work.

At this time, AMTA encourages its members who are considering volunteering to provide massage relief to workers to monitor the AMTA website for updates it receives. Those members who are MERT-trained are encouraged to keep in touch with their chapters to determine if their services are requested by emergency and/or health officials.
