On May 5, 2009
Governor Brian Schweitzer signed House Bill 662 making
Montana the 43rd state to regulate the
massage therapy profession. The law creates a 5-member
State Board of Massage Therapy that will oversee the
practice of massage therapy. As of July 1, 2010 a person
will be required to have a license to practice massage
therapy or use any titles implying massage therapy.
The new law
establishes educational and examination standards for
new practitioners and establishes provisions for
licensing existing practitioners. The law also provides
a definition of massage therapy scope of practice and an
avenue for consumer complaints.
The new law is the
result of years of effort by the AMTA-MT Chapter and
representatives of other stakeholders to achieve fair
licensure of massage therapy in the state. The American
Massage Therapy Association advocates for fair and
consistent licensing of massage therapists in all
states.
