An Apple a Day
Staying healthy is important for massage therapists and clients alike, and one way to power up against
colds is to follow the old adage and eat an apple a day. Fall is prime time for apples, a nutrient-dense
fruit that packs a healthy punch. There’s no better time than now to enjoy them.
Nutrient density is the new buzz term from nutrition experts. Nutrient-dense foods provide more
nutrients and generally fewer calories per unit volume. For example, an apple and a small bag of
pretzels can have the same number of calories, but an apple has more nutrient density. For the
same number of calories, an apple provides fiber, vitamin C and potassium.
“They’re the foods that are loaded with the nutrients we need to thrive,” says Eileen Kennedy, DSc, RD,
dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. “Think about choosing a
potato instead of potato chips, or a banana instead of a soda. Opt for a plate with lots of vegetables,
and skip the dinner roll. Ignore the cake and go for the fruit.”
Baked apples are easy to
