Creating Employee Policies

One of the reasons for employee policies is to establish fair and consistent guidelines that help promote the smooth operation of your business. Examples of employee policies include:

  • Work hours and days
  • Employee benefits
  • Dress and hygiene requirements
  • Pay increases and bonuses
  • Standards of performance (these might specify performance indicators such as punctuality, customer service and administrative duties)
  • Reasons for dismissal

You'll find that having policies—and enforcing them—might actually motivate employees, and increase loyalty and job satisfaction. You are passionate about your practice, and your expectations of employees reflect your dedication to both your business and the massage therapy profession.

You should review and update your employee policies on a regular basis, either annually or biannually. Additionally, consider asking your employees for input so they feel invested in the parameters you set for your practice and their employment. Working cooperatively is beneficial for all involved in the success of your business.
