New York State
Research has shown the benefits of massage for people with autoimmune diseases. For 40 years, S.L.E. Lupus Foundation/Lupus Research Institute has led the way in delivering care, raising awareness and educating people about lupus. AMTA volunteers have been working on the local level with S.L.E. Lupus Foundation for some time, educating and providing massage therapy to those affected by this disease.
These efforts have lead to a new opportunity for more people living with lupus to experience the benefits of massage. AMTA and S.L.E. are pairing up to give AMTA members in the New York City area the opportunity to serve this deserving population. AMTA members can list themselves on the S.L.E. website for free as a way for people with lupus to find qualified massage therapists in their area.
Many people who have lupus are not able to work and/or are on fixed incomes. This means they may not be able to afford the standard rate—even though they would benefit from regular massage. S.L.E is looking for AMTA massage therapists open to offering massage on a sliding scale. Typically a sliding scale discounts the regular price so there is less of a financial barrier for lower income people. This allows clients to pay what they can afford. As with any arrangement, however, therapists should agree to terms up front, including payment. As with any client, you would not be obligated to treat people who cannot afford your fee or do not pay you. Since the affects of massage are cumulative, sliding scales also allow people to receive massage on a regular basis, which is more beneficial for their condition. For more information, see the massage therapy resource guide, or visit the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation Facebook page.
